This paper deals with the issue about models that will help Croatian companies to
bridge the gap between their current situation and that of the developed companies.

The aim of project Innovative Smart Enterprise is to understand current state of
manufacturing enterprises in Croatia and to help them find a new path for

companies and an analysis was made to find out which basic lean methods Croatian
companies should acquire and use. A selection of six basic lean methods was made
and the foundation of generic HR-ISE (Croatian model of innovative smart enterprise)
model was defined. This paper presents models based on the generic HR-ISE
model. The data for research were collected from small, medium and large
companies through surveys. This research shows that surveyed companies in
Croatia are aware that they need new model for production system in order to stay
